Georgia State University

The Georgia State University hockey program debuted in the 2011-12 hockey season. Originally known as the Infernos, they had their first practice on February 19, 2011 and a scrimmage with Georgia Tech four days later. The team had several fund raisers in conjunction with the Atlanta Thrashers shortly before they departed the city. The team capitalized on the tragedy by coining the slogan “Hey! We won’t move to Winnipeg” and selling merchandise with the new slogan.

After the team received school approval to form, their name changed to the Panthers in keeping with the GSU Athletic Program. In a September 14 post on the team’s Twitter page, the team announced they were still in need of players. On September 30 when they took the ice as a Division 3 team in the South Division of the ACHA, they had twenty players on the roster and lost their inaugural game to Vanderbilt 16-2, giving up 73 shots on goal. The team went 0-12 for the season, giving up nearly 11 goals per game. There is no indication that the Panthers ever fielded another team.
